The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Flowers by Season

I + O: Volume no. 02

As a wedding florist, my job goes beyond choosing the best florals for your wedding day  - I’m also here to inform you so you can make the best decisions! Believe it or not, there’s more to selecting flowers than just their pretty petals..

Did you know that every flower thrives during a particular season?

Let’s break down some popular flower options according to spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Spring: Bright + Colorful

Spring — easily my favorite time of year for weddings — is the most well-rounded season when it comes to flowers, giving you the most options to choose from. As the days get longer and the earth gets warmer, bright and colorful flowers come with it!

Tulips have a wide range of colors and styles. A symbol of new beginnings, tulips are perfect for a spring wedding or event!

Daffodils are radiant and cheerful. Their yellow hues steal the show. If you want your wedding to feel joyful and sunshiney, daffodils are the way to go!

Lilacs are known for their fragrant and delicate blossoms. They add a special sweetness to spring arrangements.

Peonies are lush and romantic. A show stopper in any arrangement, peonies command attention. They are a GO-TO for spring weddings.

Daisies are a symbol of purity and innocence. They bring a simple and charming quality to a spring bouquet. Their various hues pair beautifully with any color palette!

Poppies (another favorite of mine) are vibrant and bold, yet dainty! Their fragile petals are perfect for a couple looking for a burst of color & drama with a touch of romantic elegance.

Snapdragons are tall, adding height and a playful element to spring arrangements.

Irises are strikingly beautiful, bringing a bright, elegant, and regal feeling to spring bouquets. A floral often overlook in wedding design, but certainly worth adding!

Sweet Peas are dainty and fragrant. They add a soft, feminine touch! There’s really nothing quite as beautiful as a vine of sweet pea trailing down a bridal bouquet.

Summer: Vibrant and Lush

When you think of summer, you likely think of warmer weather, being outside, and days full of sunshine. Summer florals understand the assignment - they truly give this feeling!

Cosmos are delicate and daisy-like. They’re perfect if you want to add an airy and whimsical quality to summer floral arrangements.

Zinnias are vibrant and long-lasting, and they come in a variety of bold colors, making them perfect for adding a pop of color.

Garden Roses are fragrant, statement blooms. They’re a staple in summer and have a wide range of colors.

Delphinium are bold, yet whimsy, adding height and dimension to summer arrangements.

Autumn: Rich and Warm

Autumn is a time to slow down, reflect, and get cozy! More often than not we associate Autumn with falling and dying leaves. Sure, that’s true, but luckily enough the beautiful Hudson Valley still boasts a plethora of gorgeous blooms in the Fall months.

September and October flowers are widespread, primarily consisting of dark, moody, and warm hues.

Marigolds have warm, golden hues - the perfect flower for that fall charm we all know and love.

Dahlias have bold and diverse blooms which bring vibrancy and texture to fall arrangements. The wide variety of colors and styles of dahlias alone is all the reason to book a Fall wedding!

Chrysanthemums, more commonly known as just “Mums,” are another bloom often looked down on. Mistakenly viewed as “the ball shaped plant you sell during school fundraisers”, Chrysanthemums are rather quite diverse blooms! They come in many colors, sizes and styles and are used often in large scale designs.

Winter: Bold and Striking

Winter is quiet, slow, and festive. You likely think of family gatherings, holidays, and dreamy sheets of snow during the winter. The winter months in New York halt the growing season, but flower harvests continue for growers in warmer regions.

Ranunculus have layers of delicate petals. If you’re looking for romance, clean patterns, and a bit of movement on your wedding day, this is the flower for you.

Carnations are classic, budget-friendly, and available in many colors, making them versatile for winter weddings.

Roses — a classic bloom for any season, but especially utilized in the cold, winter months. Roses are elegant, hardy, versatile & abundant! They come in seemingly every tone, and the number of varieties is too many to count!
